WOMEN'S RUGBY IN HERTFORDSHIRE
Hertfordshire is one of the leading counties
for women's and girls' rugby, with playing opportunities for girls
and women of all ages and all levels.
Adult rugby
Five Hertfordshire clubs enter seven women's
teams in the RFUW leagues:
-
Saracens
are the current national champions. Their 1st XV play in Premier 1 -
the top tier of women's club rugby - and their 2nd XV play one tier
below in the Championship South 1.
-
Old
Albanians also run two XVs. The 1st XV are in South 1,
alongside Saracens II, and the second XV play in NC South East 2
-
Hertford
also play in NC South East 2
-
Hitchin
and Tabard play one
level below Hertford in NC South East 3.
Junior rugby
Most Hertfordshire schools now offer rugby for girls, and seven
Hertfordshire clubs field junior girls' teams (at U15 and U18 level).
Several of these teams have won honours at regional or national level.
Representative rugby
Hertfordshire field county teams at U12, U15,
U18 and adult women's levels and anyone playing for a Hertfordshire
club is eligible to play for the county teams. This is the first
step of the ladder leading to the national team.
Leading county players from the U15, U18 and
adult teams are invited to attend trials for the regional team -
East - and good performances in regional rugby can lead to selection
for national squad trials.
