Hertfordshire's record breaker

Herts 2010 Girls 7's tournament

Herts 7s grew out of a girls tag rugby programme organised by Amanda Bate, then of the Herts Sports Partnership, which climaxed in a county final held at Hemel in June 2004. Several of the teams converted to contact rugby for the 2004/5 season, leading to the natural follow-up of a sevens tournament, played at Cheshunt RFC in May 2005. Although mainly a county event, a few clubs from neighbouring counties were invited.

When in 2006 the competition moved to Letchworth RFC the hosts took the decision to significantly expand the tournament, with invitations going to clubs across East Anglia and the East Midlands. The results was a massively successful event - as large as the National Sevens - but retaining a more relaxed, "fun", atmosphere.

Welwyn were the hosts in 2007, and they opened up the tournament to clubs across the south of England - the result being that most of the leading sides from everywhere apart from the north of England took part. Tabard continued the success story as hosts in 2008, followed by Old Albanians in 2009 who introduced an U12 event as well as expanding the number of places open to U15s and U18s. As a result the tournament overtook the Nationals to become country's largest girls 7s.

Which brings us to this year, with TringRugby hosting the tournament on Sunday 16th May at their grounds in Cow Lane,Tring. 40 teams from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Kent, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire clubs and schools took part, making it the largest Herts 7s and therefore also the largest girls club sevens ever held in the UK - and quite possibly the world.

After competing in leagues the semi finals and finals were keenly competed with some attractive and flowing rugby being played across the U15's and U18's sections, the U12's played in a round robin league format in the afternoon to decide the champions. TringRugbys premier league partner club, Wasps provided 1st team players from their men's and women sides for the presentations along with the club mascot "Sting".

Despite the rain, the girls seemed to have an enjoyable day of rugby and socialising and we thank all the coaches and supporters for there efforts in making the day a special one.
