Herts Youngsters lose to Middlesex
Middlesex U23 37 Hertford U23 15@ Harrow RFC
Hertfordshire's U23 side lost to a stronger more mature Middlesex U23 side at Harrow on Wednesday, 16th April. However despite looking as though they may be overwhelmed, with the half time score at 25-5, they put in a much better performance, albeit with the wind, in the second matching Middlesex try for try.
Hertfordshire's younger forward struggled in the scrums and at times they ran out of numbers in the loose wither the consequent defensive errors giving Middlesex some scoring opportunities. The backs did well with a limited supply of ball and Tim Gray (Bournemouth & Letchworth) Herts skipper had an outstanding game at centre playing a major part in both the visitor's second half tries. Both wings also showed their paces when given their opportunity.
Middlesex, playing with the strong cold wind in the first half, were soon 12 points up, but Herts then replied with a try by second row Gareth Briggenshaw (Tring), after winning good ruck ball. That was Herts only score of the half and with Middlesex adding two unconverted tries and a penalty the score was 25-5 at half time.
Middlesex increased their lead with another try immediately on the resumption, but then Herts made good use of the wind to take up some attacking positions. Gray was involved twice in the movement that eventually put Greg Bezzer (Fullerians) in for try after 7 minutes. Middlesex replied with a converted try, but Herts had the last word when Gray made a great individual run and put Aaron MacDougall (Hemel Hempstead) over for try.
