Another Win for Herts A
Middlesex County Clubs 17 Hertfordshire A XV 35
Hertfordshire's A XV, made up principally of players from Level 7 and below, continued their ascendancy over their Middlesex counterparts at Harrow on Wednesday, 15th, November. In winning the match 35 - 17 they completed their fifth successive victory since the re-commencement of the series.
Despite being a long way short of the original selection and with little time for preparation, the team blended well and the pack in particular soon moulded into a powerful unit. The font row played particularly well with Simon Banks (Welwyn) winning two against the head in the first half and his replacement Jeff Lord (Hitchin) another in second half. There was good understanding in the loose as well where Darren Perry (Hemel Hempstead) in had an excellent game.
On a rare mild night at Harrow, Herts took an early lead though a penalty by Kim McClellan (Fullerians). Middlesex replied with a converted try after 15 minutes, but shortly after Dave Orton (Welwyn) drove over to restore the Herts lead. Wing Peter Elliott (Welwyn) extended the lead with try converted by McClellan, but Middlesex had time to score a second try just before half time to make the score Middlesex 12 Herts 15.
Another McClellan penalty early in the second half increased the visitor's lead and after 13 minutes they went further ahead as James Scott (Hitchin) crossed the line for a try. Middlesex came back into the game with a try and injuries began to affect the Herts side. Middlesex put on a period of sustained pressure, but the Herts defence held. Then as the clock moved into injury time Herts made the game safe with two good tries as Ross Willoughby (Hemel Hempstead) had room to show his pace and Chris Buckland (Old Ashmoleans) his strength with a try each, the second of which was converted by Jonathan Childs (Welwyn).
